Diamond Settings
In most cases, you will want your diamond mounted in a setting after you have purchased it. There isn’t really much that you can do to display or wear a loose diamond unless it is mounted.
There are unlimited choices when it comes to mounts and settings for diamonds. First, you have to select the type of jewelry that you want: a ring, a pendant, a broach, earrings, etc. Next, you must select the material that will be used for the setting, such as gold, white gold, silver, or platinum. You can also add additional smaller stones to your piece. You also have a selection of styles, such as modern, vintage, floral, contemporary, or romantic.
The setting that you choose will largely be determined by the shape of the stone. You need to look at other diamond rings that are already set and try them on before making a decision. A setting may be ideal for a particular diamond, but the setting may not look good on your particular hand.
Overall, the setting should bring out the beauty of the diamond. A good jeweler will help you select a setting that complements the gem, instead of one that limits or hides its overall beauty. Work with your jeweler to choose your setting, and then learn the rules of the road.
Most jewelers (reputable ones) will require you to get a certification report and an appraisal report before they will touch your diamond. This protects them and you, to ensure that the diamond that you give them to mount is in fact the diamond that is returned to you in the setting. You should get these reports even if the jeweler does not request them, and let the jeweler know that you have them.
Make sure that the diamond is protected against loss or theft while in the jewelers custody as well. Find out if the diamond will be mounted on site, or shipped to another site. Find out how long it will take to have the setting completed. Ask to see examples of their work. Ask a lot of questions - and continue asking until you are satisfied and comfortable leaving your diamond with the jeweler.
Also consider working with a jewelry designer to get a truly unique design for your diamond setting. There is nothing better than having a jewelry piece that is truly one of a kind. Have the designer work up several sketches of possibilities for you, including adding additional gems to the piece.
